The Unlimited Bandwidth Myth

When choosing a hosting plan, a big sell is “unlimited” bandwidth. The problem? It is probably not unlimited in the black and white version of the word the way we read it. This article at FindMyHosting.com explains the truth behind unlimited hosting:

The Attraction to Unlimited
When consumers decide they want to place a website on the internet, they are often unaware of the fact that there are limitations. Unlimited is attractive because it requires no further thought. If it’s unlimited then I never need to worry about running out right? Although this is understandable, there are risks with purchasing unlimited plans.

As cliche’ as it sounds, read the fine print whether in miniature lettering in the Terms of Service agreement or in the footer of the web page.

The Unlimited Myth
Many web hosting companies offer “unlimited” as a plan feature. It is impossible for any provider to actually provide an unlimited amount of bandwidth or disk space. It’s just not possible.

For web hosts, the attraction of providing such a plan is in the hopes that the majority of their clients will never actually reach the point of exceeding the bandwidth/disk usage limits that would, in turn, push their profits of service sales into the ground. Read more

Misfired Messaging

Email Bloopers Happen to the Best of Us.

Last fall, during the hectic time shortly before my wedding, I sent an email to a close friend. With the delightful drama that almost always butts it’s shiny head into the planning stages of such an event, the email included a slight rant regarding said drama. Unfortunately, I jumbled my pal’s email address and instead sent the message to the person I happened to be ranting about. EPIC FAIL.

We’ve all done this. Whether it be hitting “Reply to All” and sending that message (which of course bears the tag “TMI”- Too Much Information) to the entire office or repeating my failure to type an email address properly, most of us have had our ‘blonde’ messaging moments.

Work Pro-actively With Kyvon’s AktiveNet Service

I suppose there are things in life you’d rather not think of- like oil changes. However, there are no real strong arguments rebutting the obvious benefits of “upkeep”. Like an automobile, or anything mechanical, your Network needs maintenance too! And, like most maintenance, it’s probably the thing you think of least…. until your engine seizes on a desolate, country road. Now, your cell phone might save you from being stranded (if it’s battery is charged -upkeep), but it wont save you from a $2000 bill that your mechanic says could’ve been avoided by regular oil changes!

There are also studies that suggest a clean, well maintain automobile provides drivers with confidence, reassurance and positive mental attitudes. The same could be said for your Network. A Network with cleanly organized wiring and peripherals, can boost your machine’s performance along with employee confidence in operations, and provide positive end results that are noticeable to your clients. And, if there is an issue, support can be provided much more effeciently to a device that is both monitored and maintenaced properly.

Have you ever wished a vendor could EMAIL that invoice, or waited on that ONE computer in the back (usually from the early 90’s) to print? How ’bout sporadic internet access on a Monday morning, and/or an email ‘inbox’ has exceeded its capacity???

Are You Patched Against the Conficker.C Virus? Don’t Wait for April 1st to Find Out.

In early March, security researchers identified a new version of the Conficker virus, called Conficker.C. This third variant of the virus, like its predecessors, exploits the vulnerability patched by Microsoft’s security bulletin MS08-067, released in October 2008.

While not currently released, it has been confirmed that this virus will become active and malicious on April 1, 2009.

Conficker.C is a major revision of the original virus. This variant includes new functionality that ranges from new infection methods to disabling security tools. The Conficker.C virus will scan and kill processes for security products including disabling: firewalls, patch deployment, and antivirus software. Read more

Think Before You Tweet

With what seems to be everyone jumping on the Web 2.0 bandwagon, are your blogs, social networking accounts, and Twitter posts hurting your company’s bottom line?

As a blogger myself, I tend to share the strangest details with the world. I write about my personal life, events around St. Louis, and a few hobbies of mine. Yet, because I do love my job and have common sense, I don’t write about work, my bosses, or customers. Seems easy, doesn’t it?

According to an article posted yesterday on MSNBC.com, employees still don’t seem to have a clue who is reading their blog posts, skimming their Facebook pages, and following them on Twitter.

Why waste valuable social networking hours getting yourself “Facebook fired,” when Twitter allows you to humiliate yourself quickly, and in 140 characters or less?

The article reviews a recent Twitter post mishap by a would-be Cisco employee who made the mistake of forgetting to think twice before he shared with the world. That world included a Channel Partner Advocate for Cisco, who reminded that would-be employee that they were paying attention.

Other than worrying about being “Facebook Fired” or “Twitter Fired,” employees should also be concerned what clients or would-be customers are seeing on the web. Even deleting a post after-the-fact won’t help their case much thanks to Google Cache.

A suggestion from a social-networking and blogging enthusiast who loves her job dearly? Think twice before you post. Do you want your mother, boss, friends, the world to see what you feel the need to share? If you don’t want to filter your blog posts, make your blog private so that only those you choose to share with will be able to read what you felt necessary to write.

If you still aren’t sure that you want to hold back, consider what pays your bills. If you had to choose between posting that note to Twitter about how ignorant your boss is, or getting that paycheck at the end of the week, which would you prefer?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day From Kyvon

Well, I can’t say I am full blooded Irish – which I understand is the worst kind – but my beloved grandmother (God rest her soul) was a fine Irish lass. She so inspired me that this year I will be celebrating my wedding day in the lush, green lands of Ireland! County Monaghan to be exact. So, it is today I give a special cheer to the Green Brigade! May all your blessing come true this St. Pat day – and may we all remember the true meaning behind this day –  St. Patrick’s Soul, and his pilgrimage to bring the love of Christ to all of Ireland! Erin Go Braugh!
